Why are these 00s albums so important

The 00s was full of weird and wonderful musical gems. From the RnB music that was taking over pop culture to the indie sound that was making waves in the music industry, the era was alive with different kinds of music. Here are the three top essential album picks of the 00s decade from Patrick.

Is This It – The Strokes

Considered by some to be the most explosive debut album of all time, The Strokes brought out Is This It in 2001 to a sea of critical acclaim. After hitting number 2 on the UK charts, The Strokes had done what many had failed to do before and managed to crack the UK top 10, despite them being an American band. Thanks to hits Someday, ‘Hard To Explain’ and Last Nite, the New Yorkers were to enjoy a long stint of acclaim in the UK music press, with front man Julian Casablancas becoming a pinup icon across the country.

Elephant – The White Stripes

With The White Stripes releasing their first album in 1999, it wasn’t until their 4th album Elephant was released in 2003 that people started to buy into the band. Going straight to number 1 in the UK charts, this album was special because it was considered by many critics to be an album that you could listen to from start to finish without any wasted tracks. Another reason why it was such a culturally important album was the fact that opening track Seven Nation Army is now such an iconic track. After making up the backing track of many football chants, it’s now even used to chant the name of leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn.

Fleet Foxes – Self Titled

A seemingly forgotten band in indie folklore, Fleet Foxes released their self-titled debut album in 2008. After winning acclaim from the critics and fans, the album went platinum in the UK and won 10 music magazine awards both in the UK and the US. This album was so important because it not only made a name for Fleet Foxes but the band built a new genre known as indie folk. While these two genres were already well established, Fleet Foxes played a brand of music that straddled the two genres and made for an effective sound, especially on track White Winter Hymnal. Fleet Foxes made another album in 2011 but that would be their last album until last year, where the Seattle band would release album Crack-Up.
